I just plugged it in and the PC immediately recognized the printer in the control pannel and I started printing. Worked great on a new PC running Windows 7 with an old HP Laserjet 4L. I did not need to load any drivers or do any configuration.
This inexpensive fix saved me from having to buy a new color laser printer. I am running Windows XP Pro and it did not automatically detect the printer. It also came with a driver disk which I am saving just in case but didn't need. NO drivers required and it works just fine. I had no trouble installing the Sabrent USB to DB25 Female Parallel Printer Cable. The product package says it will work for Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Vista and no driver required except for Windows 98 and they give a link for the driver. I had to open my printer properties setup and change the port from LPT1 to USB.
I ended up installing it twice without noticing. Once I figured it out and corrected the situation it worked well. It works just fine. So I decided to try and plug the old cable into the printer, and then plugging the old cable into the Sabrent DB25 cable. I had my doubts that it would work, but it actually does perfectly. I bought this to be able to use my old HP LaserJet 6L with my brand new HP computer with Windows 7. I was disappointed at first to see that it wouldn't plug in to the 6L printer. The set-up was a little tricky at first, but that was my fault.
The prompt was to treat it as a typical parallel LPT1 port, but this did not work, and it is perhaps also why there was no HP4P icon in the window I got to through start>printers and faxes (or control panel>printers and faxes), but in this window I was able to add the printer through file>add printer and following the instructions. To get the printer to print I had to go to start>printers and faxes (or control panel>printers and faxes)>files>properties>ports and select "USB virtual printer port for USB", after which it works fine. There is a small disc containing drivers, but it was accurately noted in the instructions that one does not need it for computers operating on ME/2000/XP/Vista. I have a HP LaserJet 4P purchased in 1994 which is a workhorse and has never had a problem from my desktop, but I wanted to print to it from my HP laptop running on Windows XP. After reading reviews at Amazon, I ordered this product from this website, as the other--many of them excellent--reviews indicated that there were problems with getting such connectors to work but that this one seemed most likely to work with my printer.I turned on the printer and connected the parallel end of the USB-parallel connecting cable to the end of the printer cable which is usually attached to my desktop (hence the parallel end of the USB-parallel cable is called 'female'; the two parallel ends look somewhat funny together, but the connection is good even without being able to employ the two screws on each plug). The small complication was that I was uncertain what my laptop would regard as the port: the USB or the virtual parallel.
do not have the old port on them.I was skeptical of this, didn't know if it would really work. As we upgrade to new computers, many (all). Very nice. I have a very good quality HP Color Laser 4600. Unfortunately, it only has a parallel port out. Plugged it in to the printer, plugged it into my computers USB and it instantly recognized it and installed the printer driver.
